The irony of hiking around Virginia's Shenandoah Valley is that you are often under the tree line, and deprived of the sweeping vistas you might get in western states. Even on mountain tops, you are often in the middle of tall trees. Sometimes, however, in places like Columbia Furnace, geography and humanity have conspired to provide powerful, open views of rank after rank of mountains, marching into West Virginia. On summer afternoons, thunderstorms scrape over the ridgeline to feed the Shenandoah River, which carved this beautiful valley. This is tile 6 of the Columbia Furnace series. It may be connected on the right to tile 4, and on the left to tiles 1 or 5. All in all, the six tiles can be arranged to form a sixteen foot long frieze, without repetition.
