Welcome to our town! Founded by B.F. Gilbert in 1883 as a fresh-air alternative to city living, Takoma Park (from the indian "Ta-Ko-Ma" meaning "high up-near heaven") was metropolitan Washington's first commuter suburb. A short ride on the B&O would take you from the malarial Potomac marshes to a Victorian community of tree-lined streets and clear-running springs - features that still attract settlers today. Come visit our little town and see what we've made of it. Takoma Park is a short subway ride from our nation's capitol, but our dogwoods and azaleas will make you think you're in a different place entirely.

The name Takoma derives from the indian words for "high up-near Heaven". As the oldest of Washington's commuter suburbs, our town straddles the Maryland-District of Columbia border, and has won the designation of "A Main Street Community" from the National Trust for Historic Preservation. This tile shows the beautiful daffodils which brighten up our springtime, as well as the turret tower from the old B.F. Gilbert mansion. Come and experience lovely Takoma Park!

"But what a cruel thing is war: to separate and destroy families and friends, and mar the purest joy and happiness God has granted us in this world; to fill our hearts with hatred instead of love for our neighbors, and to devastate the fair face of this beautiful world."

Over the years, we have made a number of memorial tiles and plaques. After all, ceramic materials are some of the most durable things that humankind knows how to make. Tiles do not fade, rot, rust or decay in any way. They are our enduring legacy to the future. I am glad we could get an impression of Artemis' pawprint before she passed away. A beautiful lady.
