Columbia Furnace 1
6 x 8.5 inches
$65.00
Columbia Furnace is a both a Post Office town, and a region in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, which lies between the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Alleghenies. It derives its name from the iron furnaces which flourished there in the 1800s. This is tile 1 of the Columbia Furnace series. On its right side, it can be directly connected to tiles 2 or 6, and on its left side it can be connected to tile 4. All in all, tiles 1 through 6 can be interconnected to form a sixteen foot long frieze, without repetition.

In the mid-1700s, German and Irish settlers migrated down through the Great Valley from Pennsylvania to Virginia. In this area between Virginia's Blue Ridge and the Alleghenies, they found abundant wood, limestone, water power and iron ore: the ingredients for an iron and steel industry. One of the centers for this work was Columbia Furnace, which is pictured here. This is tile 2 of the Columbia Furnace series. On the right, it will connect directly with tile 3, and on the left with tiles 1 or 5. The six tiles of the series can be mixed to form a frieze up to sixteen feet long, without repetition.

Columbia Furnace 3

There is no longer an operating ironworks at Columbia Furnace, though ruins remain. Determined hikers can also encounter trenches running up mountain slopes, from early iron miners extracting the iron ore where it was closest to the surface. The land, having been clear-cut to provide fuel for the furnaces, has now gone to orchards, pastures and scrub. This affords us the beautiful vistas, stretching to the mountains in the west. This is tile 3 of the Columbia Furnace series. It will connect on the right to tile 4 and on the left to tile 2. The six tiles of the series can be arranged to form a frieze up to sixteen feet long, without repetition.

When people think of the Shenandoah Valley, they are more apt to think of apples than of iron. However, in the early 1800s, the iron and steel output of the valley was a rival to anything coming out of Pennsylvania. During the Civil War, much of the iron for the cannon and rifles produced in Richmond came from Shenandoah ironworks, like Columbia Furnace. Now peace reigns, and the furnaces are gone. What remains are the valley, the river, and the immortal mountains. This is tile 4 of the Columbia Furnace series, and it can be connected to tiles 1 or 5 on the right, and to tile 3 on the left. The six tiles of the series can be mixed to form a frieze up to sixteen feet in length, without repetition.

Though Sheridan's cavalry burned the ironworks around Columbia Furnace six times in the Civil War, it was clear-cut lumbering, bank panics and competitive pressure from modern blast furnaces in Pittsburgh which doomed Virginia's iron industry. What we are left with is relatively open land which provides lovely views of the Allegheny mountains to the west. This is tile 5 of the Columbia Furnace series. It will connect to tiles 2 or 6 on the right, and with tile 4 on the left. The entire six-tile series can be mixed to form a frieze up to sixteen feet in length, without repetition.
